CONCERTHALL FOR THE PHILHARMONIC ORCHESTRA OF LUXEMBURG


Invited competition with 15competitors, among them Jean Nouvel, Hans Hollein, Zaha Hadid, Portamparc, Vasconi, Portoghesi, David Chipperfield, g.Böhm, Architectonica, Mario Botta and others: Status 6th place


The site of the existing business center of Kirchberg, adjacent to the old city of Luxemburg has been redesigned ba Ricardo Bofill with the new planst to include a Modern Art Museum, commissioned to I.M.Pei and a new base for the Philharmonic Orchestra. The program askes for a main Concerthall for 1500 people, a small Concerthall for 400 people, rehearsal rooms and supporting facilities.


The site is immediately bordered by a main street wihich connects the old city of Luxemburg with Kirchberg and which ist o be transformed into an urban boulevard with slow moving traffic and trees on both sides. The most public boundry offered itself for the location of the main entrance. The rest of the site is defined by different sized buildings creating a plaza in a triangular shape pointing a view to the old city. Taking advantage of this interior courtyard, the lobbies of the Concert halls open on to it, extending this semiprivate interiors to this public plaza. Grand stairs inside the lobbies, bridges and balconies celebrate the theater of the people moving, encouraging them to wander, creating the opportunita to see and tob e seen.

The small Concerthall has ist own fassade and identity to the courtyard and can be used independently for smaller events. The back stage areas are located adjacent to each other making a rationalof moving instruments easiest and the connections for the artists moct convenient. The big Concethall is designe das a shoebox as it was specifically asked for, simple shape combined with fine materials.
